Laura teaches across all courses at the Northern Film School and specialising in sound recording and design, documentary filmmaking, work-based learning and employability. Laura’s background is in location sound recording and she has worked for the BBC, Channel 5, ITV Yorkshire and the Discovery Channel. She specialises in factual television programmes, but also has credits for sound post-production in fiction films, for the BBC and has had her work shown in art galleries internationally.
Laura has also worked in live television, sound post-production and commercial and community radio. She has close links with locally-based media, including ITV Yorkshire, Warp Films, Duck Soup Films and Chapel FM. She is always looking to involve industry in the curriculum and is passionate about getting students out into the workplace to learn by doing. In addition to professional work and teaching Laura has contributed to academic textbooks outlining the film industry for the North American market and good practice in work-based learning. She has also written about Self-Shooting Producer/Directors in Television and has delivered papers to conferences around this subject.
She has worked with the BBC alongside staff and students at the Latitude and Leeds Festivals as part of the partnership between our University and Festival Republic. Laura has also worked as a sound consultant for production company Rareday on a three-part documentary series, Police Under Pressure, about South Yorkshire Police, which was broadcast on BBC2 in June 2014. Laura is currently making a feature length documentary film and broadcasts a regular radio show about women in music and sound for Chapel FM.
Laura is currently undertaking a PhD in factual TV production practices and is also a member of the Institute of Professional Sound and a Senior Fellow of the HEA.
